How to Write Multiple Choice Questions: Troubleshooting Common Mistakes

This 15 minute workshop focuses on identifying and addressing poorly constructed Multiple Choice Questions, which can lead to an inaccurate assessment of learner knowledge. Common problems with poorly constructed MCQs can include vague stems, subjective lead-ins, and implausible distractors that fail to challenge learners. The presentation offers ways of recognizing and the skills to be able to create solutions such as clear and specific stems, closed-ended lead-ins, and plausible distractors that test critical thinking. The goal of the workshop is to demonstrates how to troubleshoot and improve flawed questions to enhance their educational value.

About

Dr. Christopher Behringer is an American Board Certified Family Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine physician and keynote speaker.

He serves as Family Medicine faculty, helping teach medical education and family medicine practices at the largest medical school in the United States (Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine), as well as serves as Chief Learning Officer for the medical education company ReelDx, helping to design effective learning resources for healthcare providers.

Dr. Behringer has a focus on integrating non-pharmacologic modalities towards health achievement including acupuncture, Osteopathy, and Lifestyle Medicine to help reduce patients’ pain, regain functional freedom, and encourage patients to embrace control over their health. He has both presented and published nationally, and internationally.
