The environmental cost of international medical conferences is staggering
While global climate goals urge individuals to limit their CO2 emissions to 2.3 tonnes per year by 2030, attending just one medical conference, based on recent data, can emit an alarming 1.8 tonnes per person — nearly 80% of that annual limit. With 4,834 attendees at an undisclosed conference, generating a total of 8,646,000 kg of CO2, it would take 393.000 trees about a year to offset the damage from this single event.
As healthcare professionals committed to improving lives, we must ask ourselves: how can we justify practices that harm our planet? Embracing digital medical education isn't just an alternative; it's a necessary step toward sustainability.
Doctors needed a better way to retrain
"Due to our young families and demanding practice as plastic surgeons, we couldn't be at medical talks, held on different continents. Attending simply wasn't feasible. On top of that, the environmental impact of flying had started to weigh heavily on us.
We knew other doctors were facing similar challenges.
Change was needed.
